LONDON MARKETS. Press Association. WELLINGTON, yesterday. The Department of Industries and Commerce has received a cable from the High Commissioner, London, May 18th, stating: The mutton market is quiet, and there is a poor local demand, except for prime light-weights, of which great scarcity exists. Canterbury mutton is at 4d, North Island 3§d. There is a large supply of ewes on the market, averaging 2|d. River Plate' mutton is in large supply, and is being strongly pushed for sale. The average price for this mutton is 3id. There is a good demand for all lamb, with more enquiry for forward delivery. Canterbury brands are at SRI, others 5Jd. Stocks of New Zealand beef on hand are light, and the market is firm. Present quotations are 3 5-8 d and 3id, for hind and forequarters respectively. The. butter market is steady for fine quality, but lifeless for ordinary classes. Siberian supplies are increasing, and are quoted at 90s. The average price of choice New Zealand butter is 995, Danish 105 s. The cheese market is firm, and there is a good demand for New Zealand cheese at 66s for white and 64s for colored: A small shipment of Canadian cheese has been delayed on account of the strike. The hemp market is quiet, with only a small business doing. Good fair grade on spot is quoted at £35, May to July shipments £34. The cocksfoot seed market is quiet but firm, and there is no pressure to sell. Bright dressed seed is at 545. The wheat market is very much stronger. Oats are firm, with a hardening tendency, and peas are firm, but the demand is only moderate.
