Press Association—Copyright.' A REVERSE PREDICTED. SYDNEY, May 20. Mr. McGowan discredits the cabled report of Mr. Dealcin’s prophecy of reverses of labor in New South Wales and Queensland. He says there is a cold-bloodedness about the thing foreign to all we know of Mr. Deakin politically or personally.
FUDGE. MELBOURNE, May 20. Mr. Dea'kin’s prediction lias been received with astonishment in the labor ranks. Mr. Prendergast declared it suggested to his mind that Mr. Deakin found himself in the position of Baron Munchausen, who, when losing the confidence of the people of Africa, resorted to the-expe-dient of importing shiploads of fudge. Mr. Deakin is apparently following his example.
VICTORY IN QUEENSLAND CLAIMED.
BRISBANE, May 20. Mr. Bowman, Labor Leader, claims that the elections are a triumph for the direct labor movement, considering that the party went to the country divided. Mr. Pliilp, leader of the Opposition, is disappointed at the result, and stated it will be impossible owing to the complication of parties to have an. effective Government. . Mr. Philp declared that there was more likelihood of Mr. Kidston coming to an understanding with Labor than his party. The arrangement, however, would bo so difficult to formulate and so likely to terminate absolutely, that he predicts another election within a year.
