DEATH OF A YOUNG MAN

FATAL WOUND ON THE HAND

An inquest was held at the Magis- j trate’s Court yesterday, concerning . the death at a young man named Ere- , deride Turner Mauger. The following jury was empanelled: ( Geo. Henderson (foreman), Geo. Drummond, Chas. Drummond, Geo. Wildish, Kenneth Campbell, Wm. Third. Mr. W. E. Alcroyd was the Acting-Coroner. Kathleen Kirk, deposed that she was a married woman residing 'with her husband on ICaiti. She knew deceased. He rented a room at her house. He rented the room three weeks ago last Saturday. Ho said he came from down South. He was employed on the wharf. He complained of having a bad hand, last Thursday. She told him lie should see a doctor and he went to a chemist. On three occasions sho advised him to see a doctor, and on Saturday he said Ins hand was getting better. On Sunday afternoon at 4 o’clock he was taken suddenly ill. She called him at 12 o’clock for dinner, but lie did not get up, and Miss O’Donnell went in at 1 o’clock and saw that he was ill. Then they sent for Dr. Collins. Dr. Collins came four times and Dr. Coker once with Dr. Collins. The doctors remained with the patient until 3 o’clock on Monday morning. Frances O’Donnell, deposed that she resided with Mrs. Kirk at Kaiti. She knew the deceased. He resided at Mr. Kirk’s house. Last Thursday he complained of having a bad hand. , He said he had hurt it with a hook at the wharf. On Saturday morning he said his hand was a lot better. The swelling had gone down a 4 great deal. On Sunday afternoon, about four i o’clock, she was speaking to deceased i and asked him if-she would send for a ; doctor, and he said he would. He . told her to send for Dr. Collins. She . saw deceased again when Dr. Collins , arrived. The patient died about 6 : o’clock on Monday morning. She i saw the body removed by the police. Archibald Kirk, deposed that he was a carpenter residing at Kaiti. I He spoke to deceased on Saturday, and also at 1 or 2 o’clbck on Sunday. Deceased rented a room at his . place. Deceased was unconscious bei tween 5 and 6 o’clock on Sunday ■ evening. He remained so up till the time of his death, which occurred about 5 minutes past six on Monday i morning.

Arnold W. John Mann deposed'that he saw the body at the morgue. Identified it as the body of Frederick Turner Mauger. Saw deceased for the first time on Saturday. Deceased explained to him that he had been wounded in .the hand with a hook. He advised deceased to see a doctor. Told him he might lose his finger if lie did not see a doctor. Gave deceased a fomentation, and advised him strongly to see a doctor without delay. -

The inquest was adjourned at 5.10 p.m. to allow Dr. Scott, who was performing a post-mortem examination on the body, to give evidence. Dr. Scott deposed that he performed a post-mortem examination on the deceased, and could certify that he died from natural causes, death being due to acute septicaemia; He had taken steps to protect the public health. The disease was introduced into the system by means of the wound on the deceased’s hand. After mature deliberation the jury brought in a verdict in accordance with the medical evidence.

.Dr. Coker 11051108 us to state that it was about 1 a.m. on Mondoy morning (yesterday) when lie was called in consultation by Dr. Collins to see the unfortunate man Mauger and not 011 Sunday. The patient was then in a moribund condition and died soon after the doctors left the house. Dr. Collins did'not see the patient until Sunday evening.
