A Press Association telegram from Wellington states that the Minister for Lands left for the South last night. Mr. Walter P. Monk, in advance of Air. J. C. Williamson's Andrew Mack Company, arrived in Gisborne yesterday. At tho meeting of the Cook County .Council yesterday morning, the Chairman made feeling reference to the late Mr. J. A. Harding, and on his motion the following resolution was passed: “That this Council deeply deplores the early demise of one of its most efficient members, the late Cr. Harding, who was ever most painstaking and assiduous in representing the requirements of his riding and of the Council generally, and that a letter containing this resolution be forwarded to bis widow and family, and that the Council do jiow adjourn until to-morrow as a mark of respect for the memory of the deceased.’! After passing the resolution the Council adjourned until the following day. Captain Gumming, Harbormaster, returned yesterday from a visit to Auckland.
A Press Association telegram from Wellington states that the Cabinet has decided to appoint Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M. at New Plymouth, to act as second magistrate at Wellington. Air. H. S. Fitzherbert., of Palmerston, has been appointed to tiie Bench, and takes AlrT'Riddell’s place. Mr. T. R. Fleming, chief district school inspector, Wellington, has been elected chairman qf tjie Victoria College Council, News was received in Dunedin from Ophir on Wednesday of tho death of Dr. Bauchop, who had been suffering for a week from a severe attack of inflammation of the lungs. Deceased was a native of Port Chalmers. He had practised at Ophir for 18 months. Twelve months ago ho was married, bijt had tlje misfortune to lose his wife four mouths' after marriage,
Air. David S. Lindsay, well known as mail agent on behalf of the Now Zealand l'ost Office between Now Zealand and ’Frisco for several years, died at Wellington on Wednesday night, aged 47. Decoased underwent an operation for hernia a week ago, and was making an excellent recovery, when heart failure supervonod. The Acting Premier, the lion. Hall-Jones, has been ordered b.v his medical adviser to take a complete rest for a few days. In order to enable this his colleagues have arranged to undertake as much as possible of his departmental work. This will necessitate them remaining almost continuously in Wellington until Parliament moots next month, and compels them to cancol all but tlio most imperative ongagemonts. It is understood that Air Hall-Jones is Bufferin' from tho effects of worry and overwork at tho time of Air. Soddon’s death, and tho continued, heavy strain sinco then. Ifen Tillott, tho Labor loador, has arrived at Adolaido on a health visit.
