SHIPPING AT TOKOMARU
RAPIDLY INCREASING TRADE
(From our own Correspondent.) A fact that will give your readers ibmo idea of the progress of Tokomaru is that in the past wool season over two thousand bales have been shipped from here. It is estimated that in two or three years this quantity will be doubled, so quickly is the busli being felled and sheep-farm-ing commenced. As ail improvement in shipping facilities, the Tokomaru farmers’ Cooperative Company are having ail extension put on their wharf. This will enable small steamers and sailing vessels to come up alongside the wharf, where at dead low water there will be a depth of 4ft. In fact, the trade of Tokomaru is increasing so rapidly that tlie Union Company will have to consider in the near future tlie a'dvisability of a more regular service than at present exists. On the whole tlie company treats us well. In rough weather, like we have experienced lately, storekeepers have been unable to get their goods, but wo could not have a more careful captain than Captain Campbell, of the Haupiri. He always does his best to satisfy settlers, and tlie general opinion is that he performs a difficult task well. Our East Coast bays are often dangerous to work, and it is undoubtedly good for the coast that we have in command of the Haupiri a. captain who knows tlie coast so well. It is said that a movement is on foot to recognise in a suitable way Captain Campbell’s unfailing courtesy to passengers and to settlers generally, and his great length of service m tlie East Coast trade.
