NEW MAIL SERVICE

AUCKLAND OPINION

Press Association. . AUCKLAND, last night. Mr. N. A. Nathan,President of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce, in an interview, expressed pleasure at the receipt of the cable regarding the new mail service. “I think that the service is within the region of possibility/’ lie said, and it "would be of immense benefit to the colony.” What do you think would be a fair subsidy from this colony r “I think we should offer £50,000. The service is really what we have been looking for -for many years—a fast and all-red route, as we now have the all-British cable.” Mr A. B. <T. Irvine, local manager of the Union Cdpipariy, which may be a partner in the new service, knew nothing about it. “Do. you think a 20-day service is possible?” he was asked. < ’\Vell you know,” lie said,, “nothing is. impossible with the ships they are building nowadays. If you are prepared to consume liimdreds of tons of coal a day you can get wliat speed you like.. The • question is, Is it worth it?” Mr. V. A. Sproul,. Now Zealand Superintendent of tho Oceanic Company, thinks the proposition quite feasible. ’
