Press Association. AUCKLAND, yesterday. At the opening of the employers’ case in connection with the Auckland water-side workers’ dispute, Mr. G. S. Smith said the Wellington award would work well and tho men would then be better off than the Wellington wharf lumpers. He suggested that the case was only brought to justify the new union’s existence, not because there was discontent. The Auckland butchers are unable to agree with employes as to wages and conditions regarding slaughtering for the local trade. An agreement regarding the freezing .works will probably be made into an award local matters being held over for hearing next September. The Arbitration Court is continuing the hearing of evidence in the water-side workers’ dispute. With the consent of the parties concerned "the Court made an award between the Auckland Cooks and Stewards Union and the Union Company, making the terms of the Wellington award apply to the Company in Auckland.

Earrclly and Edward Fletcher, charged with having committed a breach of the Act. by taking part in a strike, his Honor said it appeared that this short-lived strike was unpremeditated and without organisation, and might not have occurred hiit for the want of tact displayed by the company’s officials. A fino of £1 without costs was inflicted in each caale.
