The many Gisborne friends of Mr. Alfred Carter, Collector of Customs at Njelson, will be sorry to hear of his sudden death, which occurred last Wednesday. The deceased gentleman, who was very well known in this district, was a son-in-law of the late Mrs. Brooke Taylor. He leaves a wife and three daughters to mourn their loss. •

Mr. H. X). Bell, who has been retained to appear in certain proceedings at the present sitting of the Supreme Court iu Gisborne, arrives today. Feeling reference was made at the meeting of the Borough Council last night to the death of the late Mr. J. A. Harding. The Mayor, and Messrs. Miller, Bright, Sheridan, Williams, Sawyer, Whin ray and Somervell testified tlieir extreme regret at the sad occurrence. Cr. Sheridan proposed that the memorial tablet bo placed in a prominent position in the Council Chambers. This was .seconded by Cr. Williams and carried? A letter of condolence is to be forwarded to Mrs. Harding. A Press Association message from Wellington states that' the Chief Justice (Sir Robert Stout) lias so fully recovered from his recent illness that lie . intends taking up his pjublic work on' the Native Lands Commission immediately. His Honor will leave by train this morning for Napier, thence to Gisborne, through .the King country,- and on to Auckland. Mr. Ngata, the other member of the Commission, will meet' Sir Robert at Gisborne.
