The Hon. R. A. Loughnan, who recently resigned his appointment to the Legislative Council, owing to a technicality overlooked when he was appointed, has been re-appointed. At a meeting of the Professorial Board of the University of Otago a motion was carried congratulating Dr. Benliam on his election as a Fellow of the Royal Society. A cablegram from London states that Aubrey Richardson, a New Zealand child violinist, gave a successful recital at the Aeolian Hall. Sir Joseph and Lady Ward were present. Favorable notices have been published in the newspapers. Dr. John Stubbs Wait, an old and respected resident of Oamaru, died yesterday morning, aged 77. Dr. "Wait arrived at Port Chalmers in 1863, and settled in Oamaru, where for many years lie practised his profession. He was a prominent Freemason and founder of the Lodgo Waitaki. During the course of a long residence lie held many public positions, including Mayor (two years), Chairman of tho Harbor Board (ti\ o years), and Chairman of the Kakanui Road Board. Deceased laid the foundation-stono of the first jetty in Oamaru, and turned the first sod of Waitaki-Mocraki railway. He had been ailing for some time, Tlie well-known theatrical manager Mr. G. H. Barnes arrived in Gisborne yesterday by the Victoria to complete arrangements for the coming season of “Tho Fatal Wedding” and “The 'Midnight Wedding.” Mrs. Barnes accompanies her husband .through New Zealand. Captain T. M. Brown, of the steamer Squall, is retiring from the ser- ! vice of the Union Company, and in- : tends leaving the colony at an early 1 date. A Press Association telegram from ‘ Wellington states that His Excellency ’ Vive-Admiral Sir Wilmot Fawkes left 3 for Picton yesterday. • A Press Asssociation telegram from Christchurch states that Mr. W. F. 1 Massey, Leader of the Opposition rei turned to Wellington last night.
