SATITRDAY HALF-HOLIDAY'. Press Association. THAMES, Saturday. The Hon ~T. A. Millar stated, regarding the enforcement of the Factories Act, which was a matter which affected other parts of New Zealand, that Mr. Mackay, Inspector of the Department of Labor, had written stating that in the case of a butcher employed at intervals at making small- goods, they were more shop assistants than factory employees, and therefore not compelled to take Saturday as a holiday, but could take tbe day fixed upon locally as their half-holiday. The Minister promised to bring the matter before Parliament, and to endeavor to secure ' an amendment so as to exempt small boroughs, where the conditions were different, from the provisions of the Act having special application to largo cities.

[ISBORNE SLAUGHTERMEN’S AAVARD.

AUCKLAND, Saturday. The Arbitration Court’s award in the Gisborne slaughtermen’s dispute provides for an increase in the wages if slaughtermen to £1 3s per hundred for freezing sheep and lambs, Cl for leg of .mutton sheep, 18s for potters, 4d each for rams, 2s for bullocks, Is for pigs, and the present rates for calves. An eight-hour day is provided, but employers have the right to call upon tho men to start at an earlier hour than. 6 o’clock, in which case 6d shall be paid for each '),yf-hour worked before 6 a.m., in addition to the piecework rate. Overtime is to be paid for at the rate of time and a quarter.. Cooling floor and gut-house hands and fat-house hands are awarded 7s 6d per day. Men working at manure and blood crushing 8s .fellmongerv hands Bs, floor hands 7s 6d, general laborers outside 7s, preserving works hands, tinsmiths Bs, and others 7s 6d, freezing chamber hands Is 3d per hour; coopering department, coopers Bs, assistants 7s; carpentering accoi ding to the carpenters’ award; en-gine-room, firemen £2 16s-for a week of 7 days; night watchmen. £3 per week of 7 nights of 12 hours; general laborers 7s, boys and youths between 14 and 15 12s, between 15 and in 1 lmtween Ifi and 17 18s, be-

Double time is to be „aid on Sundays, Christmas Day, Good Friday, time and a half on six other days during the year. Among the general clauses is one that waiting time and delays in setting men to work shall be avoided as far as possible, and employers shall, as soon as reasonably practicable, carry out their undertaking to improve the present accommodation for the use of workers.
