THE SYDNEY STRIKE.
NON-UNIONISTS BRUTALLY ASSAULTED. Received Mav 2, 6.33 p.m. SYDNEY, May 1. A sensational develoinnent has occurred in the coaling trouble. The coaling of the Norddcutsclier Lloyd steamer Prinz Sigismund with nonunionists was to have commenced this afternoon. Several hundred strikers and others collected in the vicinity of the company’s wharf at Circular Quay, and when the non-unionists marched down without police escort the crowd set upon and brutally assaulted them, about 22 being more or less injured. A strong force of police arrived and restored order, but not before several of them were roughly handled. Six arrests were made. There was much excitement. Thousands congregated at the wharf and watched the later stages of the disturbance.
