FIRE BRIGADES ACT,
AN AWKWARD POSITION.
i (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, last night. Recently the Lower Ilutt Borough Council decided to take a poll as to converting the Borough into a fire district under the Fire Brigades Act, hut it was discovered that a certain provision of tlio Act (sec. 31) would have a very detrimental effect, inasmuch as on tlio creation of a fire distiict all lands and buildings occupied >y a brigade become vested in the Board, which has to pay to the local authority a rental of 4J per cent, on tlio capital value of all laud and -mlduigs so vested in the Board. This iub.i have been a serious matter for •’’•o Council, ns the laud, in question - ■ worth anything up to £2500. Accordingly the poll was indefinitely postponed. It is believed that many other boroughs aro in a similar posi- ■ tigo.
