EAST COAST RAILWAY.
TWO YEARS TO WAIT. - Press Association. TAURANGA, last night. Tlio Hon. J. A. Millar arrived hero this morning, and was interviewed by the local railway league regarding the East Coast railway and the proposed Mamaku-Te Puke line (connecting the Tauranga district with the Rotorua main line). Mr. Millar said so many lines were, in hand that he did not favor starting more until the present lilies were completed to a paying point. The completion' of the Main Trunk lino at the end of next year would release £300,000, and two other lines would also be completed about that time. Ho freely admitted that the East Coast was entitled to railway communication. There were tlireo alternative routes, but he had heard that surveyors were unable to find n practical route from the Motu.
Mr W. H. Herries, M.H.lt., stated that he was through the route the other day, and that he found that a suitable route had been found at a reasonable cost.
The Minister said it seemed advisable that they should go in for tlio Mamaku line first. That was only a matter of 18 miles, and as soon as the Main Trunk lino was^. completed he would do all ho could to assist the East Coast project.
