«*. ' Press Association. THAMES. Saturday. The Hon. Mr. McGowan arrived at the Thames to-day. He received a deputation from the Drainage Board with reference to the management of tile pumping plant and general supervision. He proceeds to Coromandel, where he attends the Hospital Sunday demonstration to-morrow. He visits various parts of the electorate, and will be banqueted at the Thames on Friday. The Hon.'Mr. Millar will also be present. Several matters of importance will be brought under the notice of the Minister of Marine. AUCKLAND, last night. Hon. Miller states that the Harbor Board Management Bill ho proposed to introduce this year would give large representation to the country districts.and the Government representation would be reduced on some Boards. The. Hon. J. A. Miller interviewed, said the Maritime’ Conference had failed in its supreme object, that of having an Imperial Shipping Act for the Empire. One Shipping Act provided a minimum crow space of 72 feet and maximum 120 feet. He proposes to make 120 feet the minimum. as in the British Act. Mr Millar stated that the trawler Nora Niven will proceed from Welington to Stewart Island with Mr Waite, curator of Christchurch Museum, and Mr. Ayson, Inspector of Fisheries, aboard, and will trawl tins whole of the east coast from Stewart’s Island to Mercury Island, to a depth of twenty fathoms. The fishing grounds will then be carefully marked and made available for anyone. The trawler has 'provision for 100 tons of fish, and the owners are to buy the whole of the results of the trawling at market price. NAPIER, last night. At the annual meeting of the StarBo wkett Society, it was shown that the total loss through the late secretary’s defalcations amounted to £738, which had been reduced to £2lB bypayment of the fidolitv bond. ASHBURTON, last night. Air. Robert Clark, of Tinwald, has sold his Clydesdale entire to Mr. F. A. Bremner, for 800 guineas. OAMARU, last night. Two young men named Nolan Christopher and Henry Easton, aged 19 and 18 respectively, were arrested yesterday on a charge of burglary from a dwelling-house at Glenavy. They were charged at the Police Court this morning and remanded till Tuesday.
LIQUOR IN A PROHIBITION DISTRICT.
INVERCARGILL, last night,
The police raided two local hotels on Saturday in search of illicit liquor. Liquor taken possession of at the Club where there are lockers was returned, and it is understood that nothing to justify proceedings was found. Liquor was confiscated at another hotel also, and informations will be laid against tho proprietor for keeping liquor.
THE LAND BILL. INVERCARGILL, last night
Mr. T. Mackenzie, M.H.R., addressed a well-attended meeting in Invercargill on Saturday afternoon under tlio auspices of the Farmers’ Union. His speech was largely on the lines of his previous address. At the conclusion it was unanimously resolved: “That no land law can be acceptable to the farming community of Southland without freehold or the optional system.” THE SCHOOL JOURNAL. . Interviewed, he stated that the School Journal to be issued on May Ist would be distributed monthly in future, each child lcceiving a copy.' The first number will be. largely historical, dealing with Tasman’s and Cook’s voyages, and contains articles on hygiene. A LLEGED CATTLE-STEALING. INVERCARGILL, last night. The police are making encpiiiies into a case of alleged cattle-stealing in tlio Otautau district. DEATH OF A SEAMAN. LYTTELTON, last night. .• Herbert Richard, aged 42 years, a native of England,a first-class domestio employed as gun-room cook on HMS. Powerful, was found dead in bed at 5.45 a.m. to-day. Ho was m ordinary health yesterday excepting for a headache. He said he fe t tired fond turned m at 9 P-I"; 11 ‘ ( - V post mortem showed that lie died of aneurism of the heart. Deceased was a married man, his wife ] ivin h Sydney. He will have a naval funeral at 10 a.m. to-morrow.
INSPECTING CHILDREN’S TEETH WELLINGTON, last night.
The Wellington Dental Association recently made representations to the Minister of Health urging the necessity of inspection of school children’s teeth, and suggesting that a qualified dentist he attached to the Department of Public Health. This was the outcome of an examination made some time ago of the teeth of children attending the public schools in Wellington, when a serious state of affairs was disclosed. Mr. Fowlds promises to give the matter careful consideration.
HOME FOR INCURABLES. WELLINGTON, last night. The Home of Our Lady of Compassion, recently erected at Island Bay, which is under the charge of the Rev. Mother Mary Joseph Aubert, was opened by Archbishop Redwood this afternoon. Speeches were delivered by the Archbishop, tho Hon. AY. Hall-Jones (Acting-Premier), T. W. Hislop (Mayor of Wellington), Dr. McArthur, S.M.. and others. The Home is designed to accommodate 150 incurable children of all denominations.

The diver who examined tho steamer luveran, which was ashore in Wellington harbor, reports that tho vessel is undamaged, not even a plato being dented.

At the annual meeting of the AVangnnui A. and P. Association on Saturday afternoon, the report and balance sheet were satisfactory. Mr .(. H. Nixon was re-elected president. It was resolved' to increase the secretary’s salary to £2OO.
