BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The last mooting of the present Borough Council was hold last night. Bresoit: Messrs Townloy (in the chair), Whinray, Lysiur, Sheridan, Bright, Miller, Webb, Bees, Colby, and Harding Or. Harding said that the brick area shou.u come before the Council. -—The Chairman said that the minutes as read should he confirmed. — Or Sheridan said it must be corrected by the new Council.—The minutes were then adopted. The Council expressed their regret at Mr. Hay’s breakdown of heallh necessitating tile appointment of Air Coustoji to relieve him.—Mr Lysnar objected to tlie appointment being accepted.—Or. Sheridan proposed that a letter of regret bo sent, and Or. Harding seconded.—Carried.

Or. Lysnar proposed an adjournment.—Or. Colley objected.—The Chairman (Air Townloy) then retired and Cr. Whinray was voted to the chair.

A petition was received from residents of Ballanco street and its vicinity, Whalaupo’ko, signed by twentyseven ratepayers,drawing attention to the fact that though they complained some twelve months ago about the deplorable condition of the footpath, roadway and drains, no attempt had been made to remedy matters beyond cleaning out the drains. The footpath was so uneven and in such bad condition that after every heavy rain it was in many places absolutely under water, and impassablo to pedestrians. The roadway was badly in need of repair, and after every rain was a quagmire. The drains on both sides of the roads required cleaning out before the winter set in, and the one on the northern side required grading and deepening. They asked the Council to give immediate instructions to have these matters attended to before the wet weather set in.—Cr. Lysnar moved that the - request be given effect to.—-Cr. Colley put in an amendment that the Engineer should report.—The amendment was carried. The Chairman of the. Seddon Alemorial Committee, Rotorua, wrote stating that the residents of Rotorua were thinking of procuring a town clock as a memorial to the late R. J. Seddon, and would bo obliged for particulars of the cost, design, where procurable, etc., of the Gisborne town clock. A photograph, if procurable, would be very useful.— Cr. Webb thought that the letter should be handed to the Rev. Herbert Williams, as lie had all particulars.—The Chairman moved as an amendment that the Council supply the particulars.—The amendment was carried. Air. R. J. Reynolds wrote that a drain to the. Wrfikanao was blocked, and that it should be cleaned out immediately. He understood the Borough was liable for any damage resulting—The Engineer is to report to next mooting.

Betel - Galloway was granted a dealer’s license. AH. R. tJlick Burke wrote drawing attention to tlio bad state of Northootc road, and asking the Council to have the road put in a better state—Deferred to next meeting. Air. A. F. Matthews wrote drawing attention to a part of subdivision of Wai-o-hiharore block, which was made the depot' for the whole of the rubbish, etc., of the town, which appeared to be dealt with in a careless manner.—To be reported on to the new Council.

Air. H. C. Waterfield, private secretary. wrote that His Excellency the Governor would arrive in Gisborne on 19th Alay, and leaves on the 22m1, when lie hoped to meet the citizens.—Referred to the new Council.

The secretary of the Harbor Board wrote forwarding a resolution passed b.v the Board at last meeting, and asking the Council to take the necessary steps to have the resolution carried out without delay.—Cr Harding referred to the nuisance, and moved that, the terms of the letter be given effect to.—Carried. The award in regard to the land taken by proclamation for the approach to the Roebuck Road bridge was read by the clerk. The executors of the late Veil. Archdeacon S. Williams made a claim on the Council for £IOOO for an area of one acre two and three-tenths perches. The claim was referred to the arbitration of Messrs R. 7). B. Robinson and A. F. Kennedy, who awarded the sum of £s7s.—The Clerk explained that the costs brought it up to £6lO. Mr. E. Harvey Gibbon, Borough Engineer. reported as follows: Cranford road culvert: This culvert will be completed in the course of a day or two. It would have been finished last week but the inclemency of the iveathcr prevented the men from working. Roebuck road bridge: This work is still hung up owing to the Marine Depaitment requiring a survey of the locality to bo made. Roads generally: The recent wet weather demonstrated that the roads in the district were completely worn out.—lt was decided that the Engineer proceed with important work, and the rest ho held in abeyance.
