1 TO THE BURGESSES OF GISBORNE. Ladies and gentlemen,— I bog to offer you my services as u member of the Borough Council. I appeal to you on the question of sanitation. Within a few months wo shall have an abundant supply of pure water throughout the Borough, but, having brought the water into tho town, it will ho necessary to carry it out again. Failing an efficient system of drainage the health of the town will bo a good deal worse thou it is at present, because every section will be swamped with water. I dvocato that a scheme of drainage should ho immediately undertaken to cleanse tho town and abolish the resent abominable sanitary arrangements. The question of proper provision for cases of infectious diseases is also most urgent. Should you do mb Ihe honor to elect, me I shall do my utmost to see that these matters receive prompt attention. Yours faithfully, J. W. WILLIAMS, M.D. TO THE BURGESSES OF GISBORNE. y ARIES AND GENTLEMEN,— 8 j I am a Candidate for a seat on the Borough Council. I have always been convinced that a Drainage System must necessarily follow the institution of a Water Supply, and it elected I shall honitil,\ support any practical scheme that is within our means. I shall always he ready to support any project for the better lighting of the outlying parts of the Borough. I shall try to have the money available for roads and footpaths spent in such a way that all parts of the Borough may have fair treatment. Any project that, in my opinoin, makes for the welfare of our growing town and district will have my support. Should you do me the honor to elect me I shall do my best to justify your action. Yours faithfully, E. H. MANN. TO THE BURGESSES. Ladies and gentlemen,— In again soliciting your ipport, 1 must congratulate you on lie marked progress which has charcterised Gisborne and the surroundlg district of late. Still further regress should be our common aim, nd this can he best obtained by havlg our town as up-to-date as it .s ossible to make it, especially in reard to the Health, Comfort, and ell-being of the community. WATER SUPPLY.—This is now Imost an accomplished fact, and it uly remains for the Council to see iat EVERY HOUSEHOLDER in le, Amalgamated Borough is suplied with tho water. DRAINAGE. —This question must e faced immediately. FIRE BRIGADE—If elecetd, I itend moving to bring into operaion tho provisions of ‘‘The Fire Briados Act,” and so place the local irigade on a more satisfactory basis, nd establish Hose Reel Depots at test End, Whataupoko, and Ivaiti. Having lived amongst you for some 0 years (practically all my life), I ally appreciate the honor which has ecu conferred upon me by my fellowurgosses. I have tried-in tbc past a do my duty to the people as a •hole. I now respectfully ask for a ontimianco of your favors, and can ssure you, if ugain returned, I will trivc my utmost to deserve and reain'K'our confidence. ■ Yours faithfully, WILLIAM MILLER.
MU N ICiPAL ELECTION. TO THE BURGESSES OF THE BOROUGH OF GISBOBNE. IN offering my services as a Councillor for a further term, I confidently refer you to the records of the expiring term, and leave you to declare at the ballot-box whether or not I have endeavored to fulfil the pledge given to you two years ago, to work honestly and assiduously in the interests of the whole Borough. Should you deem that my past services entitle me to re-election, I shall leave no stone unturned to promote the progress of Gisborne. Briefly, my views of our urgent requirements are: 1. The speedy completion of our Waterworks. 2. An effective and . up-to-date .Drainage extending through the whole Borough. 3. When the Loan for such Drainage scheme is being raised, I am of opinion that a sum of from ten to fifteen thousand should he added to the amount thereof for Road Improvements, it being quite impossible to undertake even urgent requirements from ordinary revenue; and the great saving in maintenance of work once properly accomplished would, I am convinced, more than pay interest and sinking fund, and thus result in a substantial annual saving. 4. Tho setting up of a Select Committee of the Council for the purpose of endeavoring to acquire the Gasworks, or, in the event of being unable to come to reasonable terms, the installation of a system of Electric Lighting. 5. The erection of suitable Re-venue-earning Municipal Buildings. In conclusion, let me assure you you of my firm faith in tho stability and future prospects of our town, and my firm conviction that, with increasing values and a prudent administration, all the above progressive improvements can be accomplished with but a trilling increase (if any) of our present rate. - Yours faithfully, JOHN SHERIDAN. April 20th, 1907.
