CORRESPONDENCE
BIBLE IN SCHOOLS. To the Editor of the Gisborne Times. Sir,—l have received a communication from the Chairman of the Nelson Town Schools Committee, in which he gives the following facts:—That the Nelson system of Bible teaching has been in existence since 1897, and never , was more alive than it is to-day; that it is a distinct success in all tho six schools in the town; that the fourteen voluntary teachers are as punctual and regular as the State school teachers themselves; that although in one of the schools (the Boys’ Central) there was irregularity on the part of two teachers several years ago, they arc no longer on the staff. This was the fact which camo under your notice, and to which Mr. Gibbs refers in his letter of yesterday ; but you were apparently unaware of the fact that in the other five schools containing from 800 to 1000 children, the classes have been carried on without a break for the whole ton years and have been quite satisfactory all through, as Mr. Gibbs admits his own also to have been for some time past now. The Lyttelton Times recently contained an article strongly supporting the scheme and it is quite evident from the replies received this week from parents of children attending tho Gisborne schools that an overwhelming majority in this town are in favor of it.— I anl, etc., F. W. CHATTERTON. To Ran College, April 18.
