RAILWAY LEAGUE
THE GOVERNOR’S VISIT
A special meeting of tlio League was held yesterday afternoon, among those present being: Tlio Mayor (Mr. j. To wnley), the Hon. Captain Tucker, Messrs C. Gray, and W. D. Lysnar.
Oil the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Mr. Gray, the following resolution was carried: “The Railway League ventures to suggest that the occasion of the visit of His Excellency tho Governor next month might be appropriately marked by the opening of tho railway so far as the Waikoliu bridge, and therefore respectfully beg tlio Hon. the Minister for Public Works to give instructions that tlio lino to the Waikoliu bridge lie completed before that time.” Hon. Captain Tucker, who had come away from the County Council meeting to attend for a few minutes said that the foregoing resolution had just been adopted by the Council. The Mayor, in speaking to tho motion, said that ho hoped the public would turn out in great numbers on tho occasion, because it would be a very important step in the progress of tho railway, and of especial importance to that portion of the district, enabling the settlers to avoid travelling over the dangerous section of the road. It would be a great stop in advance, and it gave him great pleasure to propose that t-lie resolution ho forwarded to the -Minister.
Mr. Gray agreed with the completion of the section would he an important step in advance. Discussion then took place as to the programme to be followed out on the Governor’s arrival, among the points mentioned being a visit to the Tc Arai Church, which the Mayor and Mr. Gray agreed was one of the interesting places that His Excellency should not miss seeing. Tho question arose as to what the form of entertainment should bo in tho evening. It was mentioned that a concert was to he held on one evening by “Te Rangi Pai.” Mr. Gray said His Excellency might not care to come to Gisborne to hear a concert. The Mayor said he had heard nothing about the matter. On a previous occasion they had entertained celebrites with a very good concert, hut all such details®, could be gono into later on. At present they had made good progress in setting the tiling going, and the joint committees should he able to arrange a very satisfactory programme that would ensure the visit being a mcmorahlo one for the district. The meeting then adjourned.
