Judgment was granted in default by tlio Magistrate (Mr. Barton) yesterday afternoon, for the amount claimed £3l 18s Gd and costs £2 11s, in the case Haition and Smith v. 11. S. S. C. Brooking.
Owing to several members of the Gisborne Debating Society (including the loaders of the debate) desiring to attend other meetings on Monday next, it has been decided to hold no mooting of the Society on that evening.

The Native Appellate Court coillisting of Judges Jones and Rawsou, proceeded yesterday by coach to Port Awanui. Tlio intention was to have proceeded by tho steamer Haupiri on Tuesday but the mishap to that vessel necessitated an alteration in the arrangements .
In the report presented to the annual meeting of tho Fire Brigade it was mentioned that during the past year there had been thirteen alarms of fire, only seven of which were fires of any consequence. Damage of an estimated value of £2OOO or more was done, but' in each case the buildings were well alight before the alarm was given.

Thanks wore returned in tho annual report of the Firo Brigado to the people of Gisborne for tho manner in which they had assisted in sending a team to the International Exhibition Fire Brigades Demonstration. Two collectors had gathered £57 8s Gd in a very short time. Though the team did its best it was unsuccessful, and it had to bo recognised that only firstclass teams had any chance of winning in such competitions.
As there is some doubt as to who are entitled to vote at the forthcoming Borough Council elections it may be as well to remind residents that all those persons who appear on the District Electors’ Roll.with freehold, ratepaying or residential rights may vote. The roll closed on April 10th so that any who have neglected to sec that they are enrolled as electors cannot enroll now in the hope of voting at the forthcoming election.
After tho presentation of prizes at tho High School yesterday Air. Alorgan said he had a pleasing duty to perform, having been requested to present two prizes kindly donated by Air. Kinder for Exhibition essays in connection with the Hgh School, irrespective of prizes given in a competition. 'The first prize (“Esmond, •‘The Vicar of Wakefield” and Sir Roger do Covorley”) was awarded to George Fromm and the second prize (“Vanity Fair”) to Albert Tyson. In
presenting the prizes Air. Morgan made a few encouraging and appreciative remarks. The essays will be published in the next issue of “The School Alagazine.”
At the nnual meeting of the Fire Brigade, Senior Foreman Wildish proposed that the Brigade should take the necessary steps to bring Gisborne under the Fire Districts Act of last session. In the course of a long discussion on the matter it was stated that owing to the installation of the high-pressure water supply and the extended limits of the town it would bo necessary to reorganise the whole working of the Brigade. It would bo necessa.ry to establish several hose and hydrant sections on tho outskirts of tho town. The motion was carried, and it was further decided to ask the Borough Council ,to appoint the Sub-superintendent a Fire Inspector under tho new by-laws.
Air. R. Cogar, secretary of the Gisborne Chess Club, has received an intimation from the Chief Postmaster, Air. AV. 11. Renner, that the wires will be at the disposal of the Club on Saturday evening, for the match with the Wairoa Club. The latter Club has wired Air. Cogar giving its list of players, who are— Alessrs. Jonson, Sliaw, Carr, Brown. Swansoger, and Burridgo. The local players will bo: Alessrs J. A. Connell, Claude Sainsbury, AV. F. Crawford, J. AV. AA’itty, H. A. King, J. H. Bull, and emergency (Air. Blackburn). Air. AA 7 . J. Hawley will act as umpire for Wairoa. The match will commence at half-past eight sharp, and members are requested to attend at that time at the telegraph office.
At the sitting of the Tni Raivhiti District Alaorj Land Board yesterday the applications of Robert Preston (represented by Alessrs. Rees Bros.) to lease Ruaohinetu 1152 from Eruera Paraono and others, and Ruaohinetu 181 from Heini to Oariki, were dismissed as- they were not in correct form. The lease of Ruaohinetu IA2 from Aleri AAliati and others to Robert Preston ([fees Bros.) for 15 years was approved. Alessrs. Ch'risp and Coleman were granted an adjournment till June 3rd of Eftio Jean Glassford’s application to lease AYhakaongaonga 2G from Hiporn Nianin and others, and of the same applicant's motion for a lease of Alanga-
poike 2AI from Arapata Hanati and others. The Board has now been cleared.
The Kaiti-City Football Club’s social was held last night at His Alajesty’s Theatre, there being about 80 or 90 couples taking part in the dancing. The boisterous weather of course interfered with the attendance, and a number of country peoplo were prevented from coming down. The committee, consisting of Alessrs J. J. Alartiii, W. Hay, J. Olsen, J. W. Nicolas, P. C. Bayly, C. O. Hansen, AV. Broughton, B. Lowe, and A. Lutrell, worked very energetically to promote the success of the gathering, ably assisted by Alesdames Nic-
holls and Pollock, and Misses Walsh, Dixon, Thom. The secretaries, Messrs J. A. Eaton and G. W. Willoclc, are to be complimented on the completeness of the airangements, and everything went off satisfactorily. An excellent supper was provided by
the lady supporters of the club. Music was supplied by Miss Moore (piano) and Mr Lichtwark (violin). Messrs H. Gush and W. Webb officiated as M.C.’s. Dancing was continued until after midnight.

THE STEAMER ARAWA. . Tho Sliaw, Savill and Albion Co.’s now steamer Arawa arrived from Liverpool . via Auckland last night. Tlio steamer, which is on hor maiden voyage, is tho latest addition to tho company’s largo floot of stoamers. Tho Arawa registers 0371 tons gross, and 5981 tons nett, and is in every respect suited to tho requirements of the trade for which she was opocially designed and built. She has accommodation for -10 first-class, 00 second-class, and about 120 third-class passengers, and has also ample cargo space. Tho vessel has been specially designed for the frozen moat trade, her holds boing insulated for this purpose. Tho gear for lilting cargo is of the most up-to-date type, and comprise 13 powerful winches and fittoon derricks. Tho engines developed a speed of 15 knots per hour on tho official trial. The Arawa is commanded by Capt. G. Burton, R.N.R. (late of the Karamea), and liis deck officers are: Chief, Air. AV. P. Clifton Alogg; second, Air. V. G. Bondot; third, Air. R. G. Alanners; fourth, Air. C. Gordon Canning, R.N.R. ; surgeon, Dr. R. Marshall; purser, Mr. AA r . A. Colson; chief steward, Air. C. ,J. Hobdon. Air. C. K. Cloator is in charge of the ongino department, and has with him Alessrs E. A. Pearson, R. Alartiii, S. D. Casobourno, AV. Hinchcliffo, and J. Clark, Alessrs J. C Smith and J. Taylor being the refrigerating engineers, and Air. J. Harlo electrician. Tho Arawa loft Liverpool on February 23rd, called at Teneriffo on the 28th, passed the Capo of Good Hope on Ala roll 16tli, and arrived at Auckland on April 9th. Strong westerly winds, with occasional gales and heavy seas, wore experienced on the run across the Southern Ocean, followed by occasional fogs, N.E. winds and smooth seas to arrival. The Arawa had 1250 tons of cargo for Auckland. After completing loading at Gisborne and South the vessel will bo finally despatched from AA’ellington about Alay 9th.
