DROWNED IN RIVER.

SAD FATE OF ELDERLY LADY. A sad case of drowning occurred in the Taruhoru on Monday night or Tuesday morning, the victim being Miss Elizabeth Wood. Miss Wood was 64 years of age, and was ail aunt of Mrs. J. D. llaries, with whom she was staying. She had for years been a dressmaker ill Auckland, but lately she had been in poor health, and liad lived with her niece. At 6 o’clock on Monday evening Mrs. Harries, under the impression that Miss AVood had gone to bed, took a cup of tea to her bedroom, but found that Miss AVood was not there, and the family at once took steps to try and ascertain her whereabouts. A diligent search was carried on privately for some time, and then tlie jiolice were informed of the matter. Nothing further was accomplished until yesterday morning when a shawl belonging to tho missing lady was found at high-water mark in the river. The police proceeded to the vicinity, and dragged tlie river, but tlieir efforts were unsuccessful. About half-past three in the afternoon the body was discovered by Captain Bennie, of Nelson Bros.’ steam tug Tuna, lying on the mud flats behind the brewery. Miss Woods had intended going to stay for a few days with a Mrs. Gordon, from whom she received a visit on Monday afternoon. An inquest is to be held at the Courthouse at 11 o’clock this morning.
