GISBORNE DEBATING SOCIETY.
The item oil tho syllabus at tho Society’s mooting ‘ last night was a lecture by Dr. Collins on “Bacteriology,” which he delivered before tho largest audience which has yet boon present at ono of tho Society s meetings'. The doctor spoke of the different kinds of organisms which affect the health of human beings and described their processes and modes of development. He said that tho science of bacteriology was. a now ono practically. Twenty years ago it was hardly known and to-day, although great strides had since been made, we wore still only on tho fringe of the question. By moans of blackboard illustrations and diagrams the lecturer showed the different classes of cocci and gave the audience an insight as to how bacteriologists did their work in developing cultures, producing toxins and using them for tho benefit of mankind. That part of the lecture dealing with common diseases, such as erysipelas, diphtheria, typhoid, and consumption, wore particularly interesting. After speaking for an hour and twenty minutes tho doctor sat down, amidst applause which continued for several minutes. Then several questions were asked and answered and a very hearty vote of thanks was accorded to him. Even then his labors did not end, for the platform was rushed and for ••mother three-quarters of an hour an interested school surrounded tho doctor to ply him with further questions.
