SOCIETY FOR PREVENTION OF CRUELTY TO ANIMALS.

A number of persons interested in the formation of a branch of the abovo Society in Gisborne met in the Borough Council Chambers on Saturday afternoon. Colonel Porter was asked to preside. Ho briefly introduced Mr. J. H. Parker, of Christchurch, who. was a leading member of the Society in that city. Mr. Par- ■ ker spoke of the need for such a society in Gisborne, mentioning some cases of cruelty that had come undor his own notice here. He showed also the kind of work the society had been able to accomplish in Canterbury, giving examples of many cases of cruelty which would not' have been brought to light but for the woi'k of tho society. In the South they had a paid inspector, and were in hopes of shortly receiving a Government subsidy in support of the work. In this connection a deputation had recently waited on the Hon. Geo. Fowlds, and had been very favorably received. Mr Parker urged tho formation of a society in Gisborne. Rev. W. Grant moved that a society be formed forthwith. Mr. C. A. DeLautour seconded, and the motion was carried unanimously. It was also decided to call a public meeting at an early date to give all interested an opportunity of joining and to elect officers and committee. In the meantime Mrs. Porter and Mr. F. Long were appointed interim joint secretaries. The following handed in their names as members: Colonel Porter, Revs. Grant, and Chatterson, Messrs J. H. Parker, C. A. DeLautour, J. C. Field, J. Peckover, F. Long, Mesdames Cliatterton, Peckover, Field, Porter, Creswell, Walker, Misses West, Oakley, and Dowman. The meeting closed with votes of thanks to Mr. Parker for his address, to Colonel Porter for presiding, to Mrs. Porter as convenor, and to the Mayor and Councillors for the use of their room.
