BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The Gisborne Borough Council met last night. Present: ilis AVer ship the Mayor (Air. J. Town ley), and Councillo’rs Harding, Bright, AYehli, Sheridan, and AVhiurny. ROEBUCK ROAD BRIDGE.

Cr. Colley said he understood the shop-drawings were in Ihe hands oi fcho contractor before he was stopped by the engineer.

Cr. Sheridan said that if the Borough Engineer said the plans were not delivered they had to rely on his word and not on anything said outside. The. Engineer said the plans would arrive by next (Sydney mail. Cr. Colley said the shop drawings lied certainly been delivered —tinplans coming were details oi the iron work.

Cr. Bright moved as an amendment that Air. McLaughlin's attention Indrawn to the specification dealing with the matter. The niition was carried. THE ENGINEER’S REPORT. The Engineer reported as follows: Lowe street: The gravelling of this street is proceeding as fast as the material comes to hand, and I expect to have finished by the end of tin* week. AVainui road: AVainui road has boon regulated and lightly coated with metal between the bridge and Tlirini street, and patched from there to the town boundary. Gladstone, Ormond, and many other streets have also been attended to. Private telephone line: Air Tombleson’s application for permission to erect telephone poles along Childers road has received consideration. Air. Tomblcson called on me and stated that he intended to abandon the proposal to erect poles along the Borough road lines and to bring his wires through private property, connecting n p with the Government lines close to the New Zealand Shipping Company’s buildings in Grey street. Waihircre reserve road: Tlie formation of this road is being pushed along as fast as possible, and in a very satisfactory manner. I have obtained permission from the County Council to construct a light tram line along the road to the AVaihirerc railway station, and I shall probably by next meeting submit plans and specifications for your approval, before calling for tenders for the work. In view of the closing of the County roads against heavy traffic, I am having all the available spawls carted in for use during the winter on the side streets. Footway. Harris street: This work is in hand, and will lie finished in a day or two. The blocks for the permanent bench marks are being placed in position as fast as possible, and the whole of Gladstone road will have been finished by the week end. Tim Engineer said that the JSng'iiiocr called in to consult with the Harbor Board expressed himself satisfied that there was an unlimited supply of first-class quality. The light tramway would he of no use to the Harbor Board, who would require a very stable work to enable them to bring in largo blocks of stone.

Cr. Colley said that the shingle at present being used in Lowe street was really procured for the footpaths, in Aberdeen road, William and Boot streets and the footpaths fronting the Recreation Ground. He could not understand why streets should he metalled and then broken up. It was not necessary to metal the whole of the width of the road —a good track in the middle of the road would lie sufficient. He-moved that the first available shingle be used on the footpaths named. The Mayor a sko*l if the footpaths would not be torn u]) when the- water was being laid lo the houses. Cr. Webb asked about Victoria Township. There had never been a spadeful of shingle put there. Cr. .Harding said the Engineer was to he congratulated on the manner in which the metalling of the streets had been done. The Mayor said there were 1000 feet of shingle available. Tin’s would be used as far as it would go.

Cr. Colley said the whole of that amount would not bo needed. He wanted to see the footpaths in decent order for the winter.

Qj. Wliinray said the Patutahi diamonds should he conserved as much as possible. No more than was absolutely necessary should be put on until the openings at present made had solidified The Mayor said it would be many months before cross pipes were laid. The Engineer said that at present ynetul was being carted from Waiherere. The Patutahi stuff was for the main load and the AYaihereio metal for the side streets. The AVaiherere metal was carted to the rati way statiouovei* about fifty chains of County road. MISCELLANEOUS. The. A.M -P. Society wrote asking when tlu* Council would need more money. The Clerk said that a boil t .915,000 would lie required during the next month. About £-10,000 had already been drawn. Certain residents of Whalaupoko asked that the footpath in front of their houses lie levelled. Oil the motion of Cr. Harding it was decided to aufhorise the Engineer to do the work, tile levelling to be done, even though no shingle he available, to. put on it. Air. 15. .). AVilson was granted • license to keep a retail butcher’s shop. A notice was received under the. Factories Act regarding the licenses for the abattoirs and the stone crusher, which expire on Afarch 31st.
