CHESS CLUB.

There was a very good attemlaneu of chess players and their friends (including ladies), in the Chess Club rrom in the Library on Saturday night, the occasion being the inauguration of the Gisborne Chess Club. Air AA'. F. Crawford, file president, welcomed those present, and expressed the hope that the Chess Club thus u-spiciously started would prove successful and beneficial. Ho read a challenge from the AVairoa Chess Club to play a telegraphic match, four aside. It 1 was decided to accept the challenge, with the suggestion that the number be increased to ten, play to continue through two Saturdays. A simultaneous match was then proceeded with, in which Mr. J A Connell essayed to play allcomers. Those who were arrayed against him were Messrs. Crawford, Bull, Blackburn, AVitty, King, and C'ogar. Moves jiroceeded rapidly, and by 9.20 p.m. the whole of the games were finished, resulting in three wins for Mr. Connell and three losses. The wins were scored against Messrs. Blackburn, AVitty, and Cogar, Messrs. Crawford, King, and Bull winning their games. Mr. Connell afterwards gave an exhibition of blindfold play against Mr. J. Tomblcson. After an interesting'game Mr. Connell resigned on the 27tli move. Several of the visitors were so im-

pressed with the advantages of the Chess Club that they handed in their names lor membership, and at the next meeting of the committee teu new members will be elected.
