AQUATICS.

GISBORNE V. POVERTY BAY. Considerable interest is being taken in the approaching contest between the two local rowing clubs, to determine which club shall hold the shield presented by the Licensed Victualler’s Association, for the ensuing year. At present the Poverty Bay Club holds the trophy, and strong crews are again being sent out. At the same time it is anticipated that the Gisbornites will put in a very strong challenge to regain the coveted honour. To-night the 10 .stone and junior events will be rowed over the AVaimata course. The light-weight crews will leave the shed at 5.15 sharp and the first race isvexpected to be over soon after the half hour, the juniors will take the river shortly after. To-morrow evening the seniors will race over the two mile Taruheru course. Trouble is anticipated should the crews bo together at the new bridge now in course of construction. Here a very awkward angle has to he negotiated, and there is barely enough room for two boats to pass between tlio piles and the river bank. It is thought that, when the bridge "is completed this course will be absolutely useless for racing purposes, and the sport considerably -hampered on that account. It seems a pity that this should ho the case when a little consideration in the mater of widening the main spans of the bridge by two or three feet would have overcome all difficulties. It is hoped, even vet, something may he done in this direction. The representative crews are :

POYEBTY BAY. Ten Stone: —Clark (str.), Seymour (3), Lyford (2), McConnell (bow). Juniors: —McGuffio (str.),Nicholas (3), Stewart (2), Hogan (bow). Seniors:—Taylor (str.), AA’illough by (3), AVcbb (2), McLeod (bow). GISBOBNE. 10 Stone: Johnston (str.). Bright (3), Fraser (2), Bennett (bow). Juniors:—Dustin (str.), Smith (3), Puflett (2). Bilscke (how). Seniors:—Bn.vly (str.), Kershaw (3), Hamilton (2), Camming (bow).
