Tlie public debt of the colony in 1905 was £62.191,010, New South Wales being the only Australasian colony to have, a larger dent. debt per head of population in New Zealand was £69 15s 7d. This was tho highest for tlio colonics for the vear with tho exception of South Australia £79 3s lOd and Queensland £77 9s 4d.
In tlio year 1905-6 there were 2407 miles of railway open" for traffic in Now Zealand. The gross earnings were £2,349,704' (7s 3.93 d per- mile), tho working expenses £1,621,239 (5s e.67d per mile) and the net earnings £728,465 (2s 3.26 d per mile). The cost of the lines was £22,498,972, the net earnings showing a return of 3.24 per cent, on the capital expended.
