TE RAU v. UNITED. The third match between the above clubs was commenced at the Victoria Domain on Saturday afternoon. Gorman won the toss from Hallamore, and batted, sending Pine and Cary to the wickets. Gardiner’s second over proved fatal to Pine, who gave Hallamore a catch at mid-on. Turner followed and knocked up eight in a few hits. He was then brilliantly caught at mid-off by 7 Coop off Gardiner. Gorman played an easy one back to Palmer, and Isherwood was bowled in trying to turn a full toss from Gardiner. Four wickets were down for 24 runs when J. Wack and Cary collared the bowling and put on 50 runs by free cricket. Both batsmen showed splendid defence, picking out the balls to hit with judgment, and meeting the good stuff with the full face of the bat. The United fielding was not keen, and the returns were inaccurate. Coop was a brilliant exception, his ground fielding being the best seen on the local ground. Dr. Collins relieved Gardiner, and Hallamore bowled from the southern end. The change proved effective, Hallamore bowling Wack o!f his pads. The retiring batsman played a chauceless innings. Ho played the leg stuff with more confidence than usual, but' it was due to his weakness on the leg side that caused his downfall. Monk joined Cary and runs continued to come freely. Cary fell a victim to a wonderful off-break from the United skipper. He showed that he is a batsman of a high order. He played everything with confidence and kept his strokes down. Monk’s bales were removed by Palmer after he had scored 13, and Witty gave a chance to Gardiner off Hallamore when he had reached double figures. Barnby gave a good exhibition of free cricket, and knocked up 27, not out. Gardiner, Palmer, Hallamore and Coop divided bowling honors. United started in a bad light. Palmer and W. Gibson <)ommenced laying thq wood on, and 20 runs were soon on the score sheet. W. Gibson was run out through an accurate return by Jeffreys. Cato followed, and was caught at' mid wicket before ho scored. Gardiner joined Palmer, who was scoring freely all round the wicket. Gardiner was bowled by Wack just on the call of time. Palmer carried out his bat for 24. Messrs. D. Barry and Thelwall acted as umpires. Scores:— TERAU.
