Secre
tary: Mr. AV. E. Holder. The Tolaga Bay annual meeting commenced yesterday and will bo concluded to-day. Contrary to expectations, judging by the climatic conditions of the previous evening, the club wore favored with beautiful wea-. tlier for the opening day of their annual meeting. At an early hour in the morning the township was astir and vehicles and horsemen came thronging in from the surrounding districts, one would think, to the satisfaction of the toll-gate keeper, who was kept very busy for a time. Numbers journeyed to the course by the coach and private conveyances, but the general preference seemed to loan toward the trip by the river in the launches, and numbers availed themselves of this means of conveyance. The fine weather attracted a large number of ladies out to witness the races. The grandstand presented a very animated appearance and the proceedings wore considerably onlivened by the efforts of the Hauiti Brass Band, which played throughout the day, added very much to the onjoymont(. Music of a soitor order was rendered by a string band. An excellent luncheon was provided on the ground by Mr. Ilinks, and the summer drinks stall, under the supervision of Mr. AV. F. Sinclair, was well patronised. The races were got off without a hitch, and some very close finishes resulted in one or two events. The course was not in good order, being rough and bumpy. Mr. J. B. Morris started the first two races and retired on his own initiative in favor of Mr. J. Fitzgerald, whoso starting gavo every satisfaction. Tho stewards were called together once during the day to consider a protest entered by the owner of Lady AVarwick against the second money being paid out on Ruanui, on the ground that Ruanui had been trained by an unlicensed trainer. Price, the trainer in question, stated that since the horse was nominated, ho had become lessor, and therefore claimed the right to train horses without licenses. Ho denied having anything to do with tho training of Ruanui previous to leasing him. The stewards adjourned for further evidence and met again in the evening, when Mr. Taylor proposed that the protest bo dismssed. AV- AlcNeil seconded, and the motion was carried.
