The secretary of the Poverty Bay Cricket Association (Mr. Hill) lias received a letter from Napier stating that a two-days’ match with Gisborne was assured, and that the exact date would ho communicated at a later date. At present it is suggested to play on Easter Saturday and Monday, or on Easter Monday and Tuesday, according to what arrangements could bo made. CORRESPONDENCE GJSBORNE OIL COMPANY. ['a the Editor of the Gisborne Times. Sir, —Some while back this company was floated with a great flourish of trumpets, and I, like many others, took shares, expecting the directors, who seemed live men, to go ahead and strike oil. I think it is time they took the shareholders into their confidence and told us what they intend doing. If they don’t intend to bore right away let us have our money back. We read of the Taranaki people procuring numerous plants and boring all over the country; why cannot wo do the same? If they don’t wake up from their Pip Van Winkle drowsiness we will get the name of the sleepy hollow of the East Coast for sure.—l am, etc., INVESTOR. TRAFFIC BRIDGE. To the Editor of the Gisborne Times. Sir, —I think it is about time an example was made of some carters who will insist upon carelessly driving their drays into mobs of sheep when crossing the bridges in Gisborne I think they should recognise- that the sheep have as much right to a clear passage across a bridge as they have, but as a rule they don’t get a show to cross without a trap or dray coming on the bridge and often turning them back. Only last Saturday a mob crossing the Whataupoko. bridge were driven into by a carter (who ought to got a week in gaol at least), and one had both its legs broken. Unfortunately the driver did not got the man’s name, or ho would have had to pay for his cruelty. Hoping tills may act as a warning to others.—l am, etc.,
FREEZER,
RAILWAY REVENUE. AN EXPLANATION AVANTED. The Government is frank to a certain degree about the revenue of the various sections of railway in the colony; and in the Gazette one can get a fairly good idea how much revenue the different sections make and in which departments it is made. But in all the statements of rovonuo there is one weak spot—the item “miscellaneous.” AVliat this heading covers it is impossible to say, except perhaps that it takes in' everything not covered by the otlior headings; but as that loaves a very wide field from which the revenue might be drawn it is plain that details of this source of revenue would bo interesting to the public. In fact, to give the public thorough confidence in the Railway Department it might be held to be necessary to give this information. These remarks are prompted by an item in the accounts of the Gis-borno-Karaka section, “miscellaneous revenue, Id.” "We would like to know how much of this sum is proceeds of the sale of rolling stock, for if the stationmaster has been selling locomotives at three a penny the public has a right to know of the fact so that they can get some before the supply runs out. Several other ways in which the money might have been come by will suggest tliemselves to the public so that further detail on the matter can be spared. Perhaps, though it is very improbable, some person bought a timetable during the period under review; and if that is a fact the buyer should be given a medal by the Department for having “broken the duck” under the “miscellaneous” heading. In conclusion we hope that the money under review will be sjrent on the local line, and that as a result two or three miles will bo added to the line shortly.
