Nominations for the Borough Council elections are due about tho middle of next month. It is stated that plans are now boilig prepared for a new Courthouse at Tolago Bay. Messrs Teat and Friar advertiso that they have two second-hand gas cooking stoves in good order for sale . On Saturday morning a 12-h.p. Argyll motor-car was delivered from tho Victoria for Mr H. Barker. This brings tlio number of ears in tlio town to nineteen. Tlio matter of tho vacant post of headmaster of the Mangupapa school was discussed at tho meeting of tlio School Committees’ Association on Friday, and was held over for further consideration until the next meeting. On Wednesday next Messrs Miller and Craig will sell at tlio residence in Peel street the whole of Mr. H. Jollilfe’s household furniture. The No-Liconso League is to meet this evening, To mark his appreciation of tho good shooting of the Gisborne men at Trentlnim, tho Hon. James Carroll lias donated a trophy to be competed for at the Poverty Bay Rifle Association’s meeting. To expedite the decision of undefended civil cases, it is proposed to hold additional sittings of the S.M. Court at Tolago Bay before Justices. At present the S.M. only sits there quarterly. Mr. R. Colebrook, of Waerenga-a-liika, has offered a guinea to provide prizes for the best essays written by school cadets, descriptive of the International Exhibition and the trip down. The fixing of the date when the Poverty Bay Hunt Club shall commence operations lias been left in the hands of the committee. The third Saturday in April has been suggested, though a number of members favor Easter Monday. On Saturday afternoon Constables Irwin and Hancox arrested a man on a charge of stealing a silver watch and a gold chain and pendant from the second mate of the ketch Coronation. The charge will bo investigated at tlio Police Court this morning.
Good entries (which are published elsewhere) have been received by the secretary, Mr. E. Williams, for the St. Patrick’s sports, which are to be bold next week. Tho committee has been working hard at the arrangements for the gathering, and it only needs a firfo day to ensure the thorough success of tlio sports. A private letter received from Mr J. M. Ilussey, the well-known Auckland cricketer, states that an Auck-land-eleven leaves on the 26th, and plays a series of matches against Poverty Bay aiid East Coast. The team will stay a week in Gisborne, and will comprise several of Auckland’s crack players.
At the meeting of the Hunt Club on Saturday a mernbor asked during the discussion of some other business if hunting was to continue. Discussion on this matter was not allowed, but the opinion was generally expressed that hunting was on a good footing and would not bo discontinued. The fact that the matter was not mentioned again during the meeting can be taken as' an indication that there is no general wish or necessity for the disbandment of the club.
The No. 3 Hawke’s Bay cadet battalion proceeds to Christchurch on "Wednesday by the Te Anau, Major Kinder being in charge. At the meeting of the Harbor Board on the 18th inst Mr. W. D. Lysnar will propose the following motions: (a) “That the Board proceed with the erection of a training wall on the Kaiti side, starting from the bridge, on the line already adopted, so as to provide a place for depositing the dredgings of the sand pump.” (b) “That in view of the favorable prospects of obtaining an outer harbor,'the Board discontinue any further expenditure upon blasting iu tlie river.’’ Patrick Cleary appeared to answer a charge of vagrancy, before Messrs G. Matthewson and W. Akroyd, J.IVs., at the Police Court on Saturday morning. Accused pleaded guilty, but made a statement to tlie effect that he arrived by the Talune on Wednesday, and had £9,. but he went on tlie drink, and between giving it away and spending it, he had no money left. He asked for a chance, saying he would look for work, and leave the drink alone. The police evidence was that he had been cadging and begging about town, -and had a number of previous convictions against him. The court did not take a lenient view of the case, and sentenced accused to five weeks’ imprisonment.
