Alluding, in an interview at Christchurch, to railway 7 construction, the Minister (HOll. Hall-Jones) said : “My expenditure this year has been very heavy. It will be a question for tho consideration of tlio Government when arranging the public works programme for the ensuing year whether or not it will be prudent to suspend certain works until such time as the North Island Main Trunk railway and some four or five other j works, which are now nearing completion, are out of hand. It is 110 satisfaction to mo to carry on works other than in an expeditious manner, but many works are in hand for which only small sums are voted annually, so that it is inevitable the I late of progress of their construction will not bo rapid. By delaying for I a year or two work upon certain I lines they would not suffer in the end. I The larger votes that could be made I later on would really result in a sav-| ing of time.”
