THE HARBOR
MR WILSOivS VISIT. Mr. "Wilson, of the firm of Coodc, Son, and Matthews, who has boon retained to consider the report of Mr. Marcliant, on the matter of a harbor for Gisborne, has had a very busy time during his stay in town. Yesterday morning ho was engaged with Mr. Darton, who acted as assistant to Mr. Merchant when the latter was sutrveying the site of the proposed harbor, in going through the soundings taken at that time. Later Mr. Wilson was taken up Haiti Hill that lie might see the line of the country and the contour of the Bay. In the afternoon he visited the site of the harbor, and inspected it at low water. Tills morning Mr. Wilson goes to the proposed quarry at Wailiirere, and he meets the members of the Harbor Board at 2 o’clock in the afternoon. He will leave oil Saturday for Auckland and will pay a visit to Rotorua. It is expected that Mr. Marcliant will meet Mr. Wilson before lie leaves the colony -and discuss the plans.
COMMERCIAL. LONDON SALES. Tho New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Ltd., are in receipt of the following cablegram from the London office: “AVool: AVo expect next sales will open at about present quotations. Market has an upward tendency. Tallow: AA’e quote fine mutton 38s, good beef 35s 9d, mixed 35s 3d; market firm.”
MAT AAV HERO STOCK SALES. The weekly sales were held at the Matawhero yards yesterday, there being a fair atendanee. Sheep: Over 16,000 sheep came forward. The sale dragged considerably at the start, but as it progressed, the biding became more spirited. There was good competition for superior and serviceable classes of sheep, most of which were sold. Cattle: There was a fair yarding of cattle, 200 head being offered. Tho sales proceeded very slowly.
