BOWLING,
The first round for the district shield was played yesterday afternoon between Haiti and West End, the former winning after a good contest by 50 to 37. Following are the scores:—Haiti (Eure, F. Pettie, W. Pettie, and Ponsford), 22; West End (Morgan, Craig, Robertson, Sirnson), 22 ; ICaiti: (Ambridge, Harding, Wallace. Nicholas), 28; West .End: (R. Crawford, Cussan, Gaudiu, Crawford), 15. The following ordinary games were played:—Neal, Evenden, "Williams, and McGowan (8), and Dalton, ■E. Lewis, Hookey, Coxson (28). In a handicap singles game Redstone (28) beat Miller (24). Riach, Kretchmar, Harris, and Hennessy easily defeated Pavitt, Colebrook, Dodd, and Witty (ry 34 to 18. During the afternoon a ballot was held, ajid Messrs. Sykes, Davies, Hansen, and McGlashan were elected members of the Gisborne Club.
CRICKET. POVERTY BAY v. EAST COAST. There is overy indication that tlio match between the above two teams which is to commence at 10.30 this morning on the , Victoria Domain will provide a good'eontest. The following will represent East Coast: — Ludbrook, G. Barton, R. Barton, Boyes, Bruges, Kerr, J. Palmer, AV. Reeves, A. B. Williams, C. Williams, G. Busby.
Special arrangements have been made for the provision of lunch al the Royal Hotel, and afternoon tea will he provided on the grounds. The Poverty Bay team is as follows: Dr. Collins, R. G. Hallamore, Hill, Gibson, H. Robinson (United); S. McConnell, J. O’Hara, Wilson, G. Übort (Wanderers); J. Lang, D. M. Gormali (To Rau). Hill replaces White.
Messrs. Thelwall and Goffo will officiate as umpires. The East Coast team will leave for Auckland on Saturday, and will play the following games:—Eden, Monday; Grafton, Tuesday; Ponsonby, Wednesday; Parnell, Thursday; and on Friday a match will probably be played against North Shore.
UNION v. TE RAU. The match between Union and To Rau took place yesterday afternoon on the Domain. Lang, winning the toss from Cary, went to the wickets, but the first wickets wont down for very lew, the last wickets putting on most of the runs. Babs 20, Coleman 16, McDonald 14, and Emmanuel 12, batted well, the total being 74. Te Rau started badly, and with the exception of Cary (13), none of the others got double figures, the bowling of Lang and McDonald being too good. When Union batted again A. Lang (17), Babs (20), and McDonald (27 not out) did some good hitting. Union won on the first innings by 30 runs. Following are the scores: —. TE RAU. H.
