Referring to tbo correction made in tho report of Air. Carroll’s speech at AVairoa, the Christchurch Press states : “There is really nothing incredible in the remark as telegraphed. It would be quite in keeping with the hstory of the Land Bill. Many things have happened to it since Air. AlcNah announced that the Government meant to stand or fall by it. It lias been modified l*y tbo Lands Committee, and it lias been hung up for the best part of a year; its author lias offered to modify it still further, and at least ono Minister has hinted that it may undergo vital alterations. Its whole history has confirmed tho original impression that it was prepared m the most haphazard and random fashion, for it has been the subject, of continual tinkering, and as Sit Joseph AA’ard has declared that not one of his colleagues is pledged to tho Bill lino for line, it is possible that by tho time the Government meet Parliament it will ho iransfornied out of all comparison u ith the original measure. In the meantime Air. AlcNab and bis friends aro learning a good deal about- tbo land question that the.v seem not to have known when they started, and incidentally that it is not so easy to revolutionise tho land policy of the colony as they thought.
