The commercial instinct is growing pleasantly in the young. A lady was arrested the other day by a small boy who wailed, "Avo you a match, mum, please?’ Suspecting him of the nefarious intention of smoking she was beginning, indignantly, “Indeed, I have not, and —” -lien buy some,” said the small boy, producing a handful of boxes of vestas. He did business. There was a large attendance at the meeting held last night of shareholders in the Gisborne Co-operative Building Society. In the absence of the chairman of directors, Mr W. Morgan presided. The lirst loan of £3OO, No. 1 issue, brought £27 per £IOO, and the second loan £2l per £IOO. The ballot of the same .issue was drawn by Mrs T. Richie, or Hastings, and that of No. 2 issue by Mrs M. L. Bilharn £IOO, W. R. Clarkson £2OO, M. H. Doyle £IOO, and Jessie A. Moore £IOO. The half-yearly meeting of the Poverty Bay Co-operative Supply Association took place last night in the Church of England schoolroom, about 30 shareholders being present. Mr. Sievwright (Chairman of Committee) presided, and presented the report and balance-sheet. The balance-sheet showed :—Assets —Plant £7B, goodwill of lease and improvements £3OO, stock £764, tobacco, as per contra, £65, sundry debtors £333 5s Bd, cush in bank £273 2s 4d, cash in shop £4l 4s Id, balance of liabilities over assets £6 12s lOd, total £lß6l 4s lid. Liabilities—Capital account 897 shares issued £S97, less amount unpaid £123 11s 2d, outstanding cheques £3OB 17s 3d. sundry creditors £661 Is lOd, contingent liability on Hayman’s account £65, unclaimed bonuses £52 17s, total £lß6l 4s lid. A report from the auditors (Messrs. C. G. Piesso and L. Redward) was also submitted, refusing to certify to the balance-sheet, on the ground that the value of stock had been overstated, and that the goodwill of lease and improvements had been written up instead of depreciation allowed lor the decreasing term of the lease. On the motion of the chairman, however, the report and balance-sheet wore adopted. Mr. Sievwright .was reelected President. The retiring members of the Committee were re-elected as follows;—Mrs. Stewart, Messrs. E. J. Matthews, P. Aylward, and A. Steele. Mr. L. Redward (retiring auditor) was re-elected auditor.
