VITAL STATISTICS.

RETURN FOR QUINQUENNIAL PERIOD. Through the courtesy of the Registrar of Births. Deaths, and Marriages, Mr H. Hill, a return has been obtained of the births, deaths, and marriages registered in Gisborne for the five years from January Ist, 1902, to December 31st. 1906. The figures afford more than ordinary interest, showing that the natural increase lias been remarkably large though the death rate has gone up very little with the increasing population. The year 1903 was a had one, for births and marriages decreased, while the death rate went up in a marked degree. In 1304 the birth rate went up, but the largest increase of all was last year, the number being 46 in excess of the previous year. For the past three years the deaths have increased hv four eacli year; there was exactly the same increase in marriages last year over 1905, while for the two previous years tile number was the same. The table is as follows: Births: 1902, 312; 1903 307; 1904, 341; 1905, 369: 1906, 416. Deaths: 1002, 88; 1903, 101; 1904, 103; 1905, 107; 1906, 111. Marriages: 1902, 96; 1903, 87 ; 1904, 87; 1905, 114; 1900, 11S.
