Press Association. WELLINGTON, last night. Tliore was fine weather for the first day of the summer meeting. Thero was a large attendance, estimated at 9000. The sum of £2-5,255 (including £2311 through the double tote) was handled for the day, as against £23,729 for the first day last year. This is a record for one day at Wellington races. Tho results were:—

Trentham Hack Hurdles.—Lavinia 1, Lull 2, Maui 3. Also ran: Pawa. Lull was favorite. Lavinia led all tho way, and won in a canter. Time, 3.21. Div., £6 18s. Anniversary Handicap: Blythemaid 1, Exmoor 2, Royal Blue 3. Other starters: Grand Slam, Wirral, Riflemaid, Aeolus, DeWitte, Arclight, and Duleinea. After Dulcinea had delayed the start through fractiousness, she was practically left' at the post. Blythemaid and DeWitte led to the turn in the straight, when the former drew out and won easily by four lengths. Time, 1.42 2-5. Divs., £8 and £3 7s. ;

Ruapehu Hack Handicap: Tupono 1, Mahutu 2, Sea King 3. Seventeen started, those scratched being Golden Gairn, William Bailey, Wairarapa, Hiro, and Pluck. A good race was won by a length. Time, 1.16. Divs., £9 3s and £l 4s. Wellington Cup: Achilles 1, Apa 2, Eden 3. Also ran: Submarine, Zimmerman, Polyanthus, Mystification, and Bourrasque. Achilles, the favorite, was first’ away, and with Eden led .to the top turn, when Zimmerman challenged, but soon fell out of tho struggle. Then Apa came on the inside, but Achilles never left the race in doubt, and won comfortably by a length, Eden being a length and a half behind Apa, Time, 2.35. Divs, £2 2s each.

Telegraph Handicap: Munjeet 1, Probable 2, Signalman 3. Also ran: King Billy, Pink ’Un, Delamere, Sir Tristram, and Fontenoy. Munjeet, a hot favorite, got a break on at the start, and never let anything have a chance; winning by a length and a half. Time, 1.15. Divs., £1 18s and £2 7s.

The double, Clip and Telegraph, paid £7 18s. Tongariro Hack Handicap: Chatterer 1, Devonia 2, Silken Rein 3. Also ran: Compass, Southern Cross, Flower Girl, Merri Rose, Kaiului, Merriwing, Sandax, and Sipylux (late Fascination). Won easily by two lengths. Time, 1.15. Divs., £4 10s and £3 12s.

Nursery Handicap: ' Elevation 1, Guid Wife 2, Gold Crest 3. Also ran; Finery, Pearl Reef, Lamsdorff, English Rose, Remark, Takiri, Vasa, Prism. Won after a good race by a head, the same between second and third. Time, 49 3-5. Divs., £6 Is and £1 3s. Electric Handicap: Golden Gate 1, Bailarat 2, Golden Cairn 3. Also ran: Repleto, Petticoat, Kurawaka. A good race; won by a length and a quarter. Time, 1.2 2-5. Divs., £3 10s and l-ls.

PALMERSTON N., last night. The races to-day resulted as iollows: Electric Handicap: Merriwing 1, Chattel 2, Rangipapa 3. Also started: King’s Lynn, St. Maria, Sedgemoor, Lomaria, Kai Errin, Frankland and Reville. Chattel made nearly all the running. At the finish -Merriwing came with a rattle and won a good race by a hare half length. Time, 1.18 3-5. Divs., £4 8s and £ll 7 s - Maiden Hack Hurdles: Maidi 1, Isoult 2, Domain 3. Scratched: Golytoh. Pat and Awapuni fell at the fence in front of the stand. The winner led over the last five furlongs, and won very comfortably. Time, 3.0 3-5. Divs., £2 Is and 15s. Foxton Cup: Montigo 1, Nova 2, Makikihi 3. Scratched: liookby and Roseal. Nova and Makikihi were in the leading division in a bunched field for a mile. Entering the straight Nova looked a certain winner. Montigo, however, came very fast, and won on the post by a neck. Time, 2.14. Divs., £4 Gs and 16s. Trial Hack: Flingot 1, Lingerer 2, Robin Link 3. Scratched: Grand Poplar, Buoyant, Dencation. There was a splendid finish. Flingot got up in the last few strides, and won by a short neck. Time, 1.48. Divs., £2 6s and 265. Hack IlurdlcS: Peruvian 1, Sen Sim 2, Westward 3. Scratched: Cassiopea and Iseult. This resolved itself into a duel between the first and second horses. After racing abreast up to three furlongs from home Peruvian drew away, and eventually won comfortably by a length. Time, 2.56 3-5. Div., £4 Is. Flying Handicap: St. Claimer 1, Kitchenmaid 2, Marseillaise 3. Scratched: Chartreuse. St. Claimer led with Kitchenmaid for the first four furlongs. The former then drew away and won comfortably by a length. Time, 1.8 2-5. Div., £2 9s. Hack Welter: Milleniat 1, Arcadia 2, The Dane 3. Also started: Sen Sim, Tangeroa, Soultito, and Raheiu,, Tliis proved the best of gOOcL-Hi" _ s for Alillenial, übr* '^■ oVl i on her Q)Vn_ Sittu. won very comfortably, pulling up. Time,- 1.49 3-5. Divs., £6 8s and £7 13s. Herrington Welter: Rookby 1, Rosogrove 2, Ladylike 3. Also started: Assayer, Joe Chamberlain, Chartrouso. In a slashing finish Rookby won by a short neck. Time, 1.32 2-5. Divs., £2 15s and £1 9s. The sum of £7179 was put through the machine. »
