Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, last night. The New Zealand Exhibition howling tournament was concluded tonight with the filial of the Doubles aucl Single Championship. The weather to-day was splendid for the concluding games, and the Canterbury green much keener than usual. In the afternoon, however, a strong norwestor proved rather puzzling, and was responsible for a considerable amount of inferior play. In. the Doubles Championship Sneddon and Crawford (Kaituna) proved the winners, with Johnson and Smith (Dunedin) the runners-up. Wallace and Haines secured third place, and McDonald and '-.Buchanan fourth. The Singles Championship fell to Brackenridge (Victoria, AVelliugton), Sneddon (Kaituna) being second, anti Findlay (Invercargill) third, and O. J. Wilson (Gore) fourth. In addition to the tournament games rinks representing Dunedin met and defeated a Couple of Wellington teams. Tomorrow morning a throe-rink match will ho played between Dunedin and Christchurch. A match of five rinks aside was playecl between New South Wales and Auckland bowlers to-day on the Auckland Club’s green. The turf was fast and true, and, though the visitors opened none too well, they improved as the game progressed, and won on the aggregate by. 15 points, scoring 104 to’B9. The rubber will bo played to-morrow, four rinks aside.
THE EXHIBITION. (By Telegraph Special Service.) CHRISTCHURCH, last night. The Auckland Orchestral Society, which gave its first concert at the Exhibition last evening, achieved a signal success, both instrumentalists and tho soloist. Madame Willurt, winning golden opinions for their artistic performance. There was a very largo attendance. Air Hamilton Hodge, vocalist, was not present, having missed connection with tho train at New Plymouth, but arrived to-day, and will tako part in tlie society’s concert to-night and tomorrow. The Exhibition orchestra was enthusiastically greeted l>y a crowded ; audience yesterday, and the attendances at its performances grow larger as tho time for its temporary deparJ tnro from Christchurch draws near. I The Wanganui Maoris in the pa have established their popularity, and . their daily performances of poi dan- | ces and liakns draw largo crowds, j The Health Department’s exhibit, ! preparation of which has been delayed till now by tlie- late arrival of many articles, is practically comple- . ted Tho articles were secured for exhibition purposes by Dr. Valentino | and Inspector Middleton during their j recent visit to England, and though all the objects promised have not come , to band, sufficient have arrived to ‘ enable a very interesting and highly educative display to he made. Tho principal exhibit is an ambulance brougham manufactured by a London , firm, which resembles in appearance an ordinary closed carriage, but contains every up-to-date apparatus and convenience for dealing with cases. : All sorts of details ore provided for, including a speaking tube to the driver. A method of construction lias beon adopted which will enable the wholo vehicle to be disinfected easily and the carriage can be used as well for fever cases as for accidents. An- , other prominent exhibit is the disinj fector to bo installed in the Christchurch Consumptive Sanatorium. Tlie Court also contains models of sewage and drainage apparatus and sanitary appliances, including a number of small portable disinfectors for rooms, school houses, etc. I Six hundred entries have been received for the New Zealand AthleticUnion’s sports meeting on Thursday and Saturday next. For tho Now Zealand Exhibition Championship, of 135 yards, there will be forty starters, which is said to be a record number for the colony for a race of that kind. I The value of tlie first prize, £4O, is •also said to be a record for such an event.
The Southland Pipe Band arrived to-night to take part ill the pip-' band contest in connection with the meeting, and tlie Oamaru, Timaru and Waihora pipe bands are expected to arrive to-morrow. Tlie quick-step competition will bo decided on Thursday afternoon, and the selection contest on the Thursday night. .The judges for the pipe band competition are Struan Robertson (Christchurch), C. Sturrock (Christchurch), and T. Milne (Enroll), and for the military contests Captains Fennis and Salter. West’s pictures and the Brescia us will commence a fortnight’s season in the Concert Hall on Thursday next.
