A German correspondent of the
Herald says that when the statement was made in September lass that Ger man firms were intriguing to secure a foothold in the Now Hebrides, so that Germany might claim the right of intervention before the final AngloFrench settlement, he had inquiries made on the spot. His correspondent was a resident of long standing in the group, intimately acquainted with happenings, and, moreover, a Frenchman, so that he could not be suspected of partiality to Germans. He wrote ; Ihere is a German copra maker at Aoba. Two German merchants of Noumea, Zeilter and Tagen, whose schooner sails under the French flag, and is commanded by a British subject, have just opened a store at. Api. Une has a native wife, who owns a piece of land at Vila, and another at Api where tho store is erected, also a pieca of land at Aoba. I heard it stated that in former years a German company from Samoa bought land in various parts of the islands, but never heard it said that of late Germans had been trying to do anything, and know of no other German traders than Zaitler and HageD, who carry on business without troubling about nationalities. Hobart, Dec. 2L. A truck containing ten barrels of gunpowder caught fire whilst travelling on a train at, Latrobe. The out side of one of the barrels was burning when a porter named Williams pluckily extinguished the fire. Adelaide. Dec. 21.
The Assembly insisted on disagree, ing with the Council amendment to the Franchise Bill. A conference of the two Houses failed to reach an agreement. 'The Premier announced that the Bill would be dropped. The position is now the same as before last rumored in political circles that a double dissolution and general election of both Houses is probable iu March.
