Discussion followed on tho rospoctivo morits of tho different coals. Tho Ovotsoor said he had boon informed that tho Westport coal was 2f> per ecntr hottor limn Newcastle, and also another ( engineer had cone even higher, ilO pet ) cent. This coal had tho advantage thn tisern was no waste in tho ash. , Mr Lysnar was surprised at Mr McLeod , saying that, Wostport coal was 25 per cent, hotter and regretted ho made tho statement on hearsay. Ho (Mr Lysnar) had the both coals tried at his factory with tho reverse result that Newcastle coal was 25 percent better than Westport, which burnt out tho bars very quickly. Mr Matthowson pointed out that His Majesty’s navy used the Westport coal in preference to Nowcastlo. In fact tho navy used nothing else in the China and Australian squadrons if they could got it, and on this account ho was inclined to givo it a trial, for if it was good enough for tho navy it was good enough for tho Board Mr Hepburn: Westport coal savod tho H.M.S. Calliopo. Mr Lysnar: It is very hot and suddon. Mr llophurn said ho had burnt bricks fov tho last i!0 years, used one sot of bars for twenty years, and always used Westport coal when ho could get it. Tho same amount of work could not ho got out of Newcastle coal. Tho reason tho navy found it was a good coal, as ho had said before, was because it was instrumental in saxing tho ILM S. Calliopo in tho Samoan hurricane some years ago. Mr Whinruy thought that the Westport coal was n good coal, and when tlioy had two engineers to say tho coal was the host, there should bo no need to discuss tho matter. Ho thought, also, they should support a local production against imported.
In reply to Mr Lysnar, the Overseer said the Board had boon using Nowcastlo coal because Westport was not available. Mr Lysnar moved that consideration of tenders stand over until a trial of Westport coal was mado. Tlioy wore not like
the navy, rushing off to roach a given point. They should givo Westport coal a trial for a month. Tho motion was carried, Mr Whinray moving an amendment that the tenders for Wostport to bo accepted. OTHER BUSINESS.
Mr Hepburn asked whore the Board’s cart were taking gravel to, Tho Overseer in reply, stated that one or two loads had been sent to Messrs Balgcty s and Co.’s for a special purpose. Mr Hepburn thought if tiic Board refused to let a small man hayo sorno they should not give it to a largo iirrn.. It was not right. Captain Tucker said it was very wrong whoever authorised it. Mr Lysnar was of opinion that tho gravel should not bo locked up. Ho gave notice of motion as follows: That” when Kaiti gravel is required for special concrete work, .such as engine beds, etc., the Overseer bo authorised to allow it to bo used, when a few loads only are required,” Mr MuiUKiwsau said that as this wss tho first tegul rr monthly meeting cf the Board since the death of late MrD'cksop, it wai tho doty cf thn Board to rcoord in iho minutes their r f gro f , and a voto cf condolence to Mrs Dickson. Tho late Mr Dicluon had been one of tho early members of tho B:ard. Stoocd'd by Mr Hepburn and carried. Tu-saay. aod Wedday of Obriptnuß week and New Year’s Dav of tho following week. With reference to tho proposed wave trap?, Mr Mattbiwson sa''d that when the next gale earno a'ong people would wonder why the woik was not oarrred out.
