In the Supremo Court at Auckland yesterday, Mr Justioe Edwards gave judgmont in the aotion of Helen Alice Malfroy v. Wm. T. Raymond, auctioneer, cf Gisborne, in whioh plaintiff sought to eject defendant from auciion room promises at Retorua, and defendant resistod on tho ground that the agreement for a seven years' lease (a home made one) contained right of renewal for a futthor term at a valuation. His Honor held plaintiff was bound under tho writion agreement to grout ft renewal of the lease for seven years.
The benefit rooontly got up on behalf of Mr A. Rico resulted in a sum of *£5C bning handed over to that gentleman. Tho well-deserved gift was contained in a purse, the latter having insmibed on it, in golden letters, “ Presented to Mr A. did excellent work for the winning team. Mr A. Zachariah announces in an advertisement elsewhere that from Ist January next he intends to place his business strictly on’ a cash basis, and to offer liberal discounts on tho present ruling prices. Mr Zachariah finds it necessary to take this step owing to a system of long credit in the tailoring trade. Mr Zachariah also states that he has a fine range of tweeds just to hand. There was a busy scene at the wharf last evening, tho clank of chains and ring of iron rails resounding in the night. Eight hundred rails for the Gisborne-Motu railway were being landed from the steamer Squall, and the rails were being stacked on tho wharf ready for conveyance by railway. Tho tiquall also brought a quantity of pipes for tho gasworks. The Ganimnt Ohrcnophono Company will commence a Bhort season at H:s Majesty’s Theatre on BjxiQg night, when they will present perhaps the greatest novelty of the age, a combination of the phonograph and tho cinemaieg apb. A few years ago it was thought that the beautiful pohutukawa (Christmas tree) oould not thrive in this district. Oa the Beautifying Association's sward facing the Taruheru ri\e< can be seen two of these trees, one in bloom and the other in full bud. Toe karaka trees are also thriving and bearing berries profusely. William Saul and Bichard Solomon, wero the name of two drunks, who appeared before the Mayor (Mr J. Townley, J.P.) in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday morning. The last named, Biehard Solomon, had 12 previous convictions recorded agains him; His Worship advised Solomon to have a prohibition order issued against him, but- Solomon had experience, saying that during two years ho was under prohibition he was scarcely over sober. “ Then you ought to be ashamed of yourself.” Solomon was fined 10s and 2s costs, or 48 hours, William Saul, also previously convicted, was fined 5s and 2s costs, or 48 hours.
