THE VATICAN AND FRANCE

THE POPE FORBIDS CATHOLICS TO NOTIFY ASSEMBLIES.

jesesK?* i GOVERNMENT DETERMINED NOT TO YIELD.

PRESS ASSOCIATION COPYRIGHT Received 9.15 p.m., Dec 10. London, Dec 10. The Paris correspondent of the Times says that the grave news has been received from Rome that the Pope forbids Catholics to comply' with the law of ISSI by making even one annual notification regarding assemblies for religious worship, on the ground that those gatherings cannot assimilate public meetings. The Vatican, adds the correspondent, is obviously misinformed regarding the state of opinion in France. The Uitramontanes themselves are surprised, and fears are expressed that the prohibition will encourage the tendency towards Gallicanism. The Government were never more determined to yield nothing in matters of principle to the exigencies of tho Holy See.
