BICYCLE CASES.

Before Mr W. A. BartoD, S.M , yesterday, in the Magistrate’s Court, George Grant was charged by iho polio?, on the information of Godfrey Daoomb, that he rode a bioyelo an the footpath in Fi'zherbert street, Wfiataopoke, on tbo 30ih November.

Mr E. H. Mann appeared for George Grant, and pleaded not guilty. Godfrey Dioomb, public aeenuntaut at Gisborne, stated he knew dofandant. Witness saw him on Xuasday, 27ih November, between nine and quarter past in tho morning, in Eitz’aerbort street, opposite Dr. Williams’ ; he was on a bioyoie riding on Sho footpath, and pa-sod very c’oio to witness ; ho gave no warning as ha passed and redo on for about 50 yards, the length of the block ; defendant pasted between witness and toe fence.

By Mr Mann : Witness did not koow it was impossible to ride on the roadway ; he did not remember seeing any other eyolist riding on tho footpath ; defendant gave witness a great start as ho passed. Mr Mann asked witness if he bad any private grndgs against defendant; bat His Worship would not allow the question. Mr Mann said tho reason be ploaded not guilty was to protest a little against the by-law, whioh be thought was msant to be adminetered with a certain amount of common sense. If things went on some publio-epirited oiiizen like Mr Dsoomb would be informing against a cyclist for riding across tho footpath into his gate. His Woiship said he would not record a conviction in a case of that kind. A previous ooavictiou for tho same cffence was mentioned by Sergeant Wilibms.
