COOK COUNTY COUNCIL.

ADJOURNED ANNUAL MEETING

Tim adjourned annual meeting of tho Cook Oeuniy Oounoil was held yesterday at noon. Present: Oaptoin Tucker, and Ora McDonald, Harding, Matthews, and lvotiway. Tho eeorotary (Mr Warren) took tho chair in aeeordanon wish tho usual custom, and called for nominations for tho oleoiion of chairman. Cr Mat Shows proposed that Oapiain Tucker ba re-olcciod as ohairman. Ho did not think it was nooaoaary for him to say muoh, as they rlt know tho work that Captain Tucker had dono in tho past. Ho (thospeaker) did not want oither to "paint tho roso or throw a porfumo on tho I violet."

Cr Hording sooondod tho nomination. Ho thooght thoy could not havo a betior chairman Shan Captain Tucker, or a councillor who was more willing so give tho time and atsoution to tho work cf tho Oounoil.

Tho clerk put tho resolution, and declared Captain Tucker elooied, shore being no other nomination;

Captain Taokor then took too chair, In returning thanks frr tho honor again dunn him, suid ho had not hoard, and did not know, oi' any wish for a fresh chairman. If tiiot'o had been any hint in that direction ho would havo boon quita pleased I so hwo seen someone else in bis place, not that lie was going to complain or say that his hand was weary of the helm. On tho contrary, tho Council had gat on so amicably that it was a pleasure to hold the position. At tho same time it was often said with regard to local bodies that an infusion of new blood from time to time was a good thing, and when tho Council was animated by’ that idea lie was prepared to loyally support any chairman they might elect. Cr Harding had kindly men- (' - ,ed his attention to the business of the

Council, but ho hail really not given the attention to the business that lie could

have dono, and had done little moro than preside at meetings, a post almost a sinecure. 110 did not agree with those, however, who thought a chairman should

“ run tho show ’’ as it wore, as a man was apt to rather force his own views than to carry out the wishes of the members. Captain Tucker referred to the progress of the Council financially, and pointed out that they’ had acquired some valuable assets in tho shape of bridges, etc,, and they had in the County now many miles of roads. In conclusion Captain Tucker thanked the members heartily for their confidence in him.

Cr Kenway’ said Captain Tucker had alway r s been kind to members, and was really more than fair. ’He had allowed members to speak five or six time on matters before the Council. He hoped the Chairman would not mind him saying so, but lie thought it would bo better if the Chairman was stricter in this direction. Time meant money to most of them, and it was necessary to get through the business as quickly as possible. In saying this, he rvas not criticising the Chairman, but merely pointing the matter out in a friendly way. The Caairman was very glad indoed to hoar nay remarks from Coueoiilora and havo his defects pointed out. Is was some limes vary difficult, and often a hardship, to etop members whoa they had something to say. Too next business was the election of Hospital Trustees, and Or Hording proposed the Chairman, Crs P. Eanway, Matshaws, Lyanar, * and Mr Tuchy. la proposing thoso gentlemen Or Harding specially referred to tho work done by Mr Tuohy as a trustee. Cr Matthews had groat pleasure in seconding the resolution of Or Harding. He also referred to Mr Tuohy, and said that gentleman had also done bis very host for the Board, The salaries and duties wore drolared to remain the same, and tho stuff was also coofirmod for the ensuing term The matter referred to by Or Seaway at last meeting with reference to she Pasiao deviation through Mr Ltisei’s. property vtas further discussed, tho Chairman reiterating that they could not close the old read as undertaken in the first instance, and the Board would havo to pay compensation. Cr Macdonald said that the settlers in tho neighborhood woro of opinion that probably the old road would bo eg,in raqnkod in Lho future, and if the Council did eioao it now they might be pas to tho expense of buying it back again. The Secretary said the serious part of Iho buaiD£3a was shat the money voted for this was £6OO or £7OO overdrawn, whioh amount was exclusive of the compensation to be paid Mr Loiael.
