NELSON POST OFFICE.
OPENED BY PREMIE 11. ( t w PRESS ASSOCIATION. Nelson, last nipht. Tho Frontier arrived by the stoamor Tutauokai last night Ho opened tho new post office formally at noon in the presence of a large, and enthusiastic audience. Tho post otlice was neatly decorated for the occasion, and the new structure, which is more commodious than,the last, was closoly inspectad. Tho Premier congratulated tho people on tho possession of the now office, which ho said, was evidence oi the prngress of tho district, and ho quoted interestin'- figures to show how surely, even if gradually, tho postal and telephono business had extended hero since the formation of tho province. In tho course of his remarks tho Premier announced that a telephone extension to tho hrcnch Pass would bo accomplished yory shortly, as tho work had boon ordered to commence. Early in tho afternoon the Premier received various deputations, including ono from tho Harbor Board, asking tho services of tho Government surveyor to prepare a plan for a mudtlat reclamation. This evening Sir Joseph will he entertained at a social gathering and will loavo for Wellington at 11 o’clock. , Tho new post office cost about rive thousand pounds. Tinline, who arrived at Port N-oolson , in 1840, and in Nelson in 3842. He alluded to the ’fifties, when Nelson was ( the first port of call for the mail steamers, t and gave interesting statistics of the postal t business here, ocrCuding by hoping that iihe new boildiDg would soon be too small t tfor tho growing businers. He was driven to and shown the new e college, wiih whioh ho expressed himself well pleased. _ , v In the evening tho Premier, Lady Ward. c and Miss Ward were entertained by the ( people of Nelson at the Provincial Hall, t where Lady Ward and daughter wore presented with bouquets, and the Mayor expressed a welcome. The Premier in £ reply avoided party topics. He referred , with pride to the railway service of the { colony, and alluded to tho approaching £ Colonial Conference in London. Although L ino Jingoist, he strongly recognised the s necessity for increased support to the e British navy for protection and the main- ( tenance of peace. Ho also spoke strongly .of the Yellow Peril, the need for mam tern- ( ance of race purity, and guarding against influx of Chinese. i Members gave brief speeches of wol-- , come, and a high-class musical programme , was provided. The Premier was presented ( with framed photos of the opening of the post office, the visitors leaving at 11 by the Tutanaekai for Auckland.
