THE MAORI WAR
TARANAKI’S MEMORIAL. PRESS ASSOCIATION New Plymouth, last night. A public maetiog to-oighs, presided over by the Mayor, resolved that a suitable memorial be greeted on Marelaad Hill to the memory of the Imperial and colonial troops who fought and died duriDg the Maori war in Taranaki, Marslaod Hill, overlooking the town, was formerly the siio of the berraoks and refugees' camp. A speaker at the meeting recalled the faol that the first volunteer soldier in the Empire who foil ia the battle was Trooper John StrCen, shot dead at Waitira by rebel Maoris, A strong committee, ineluding the Mayor, Captain Standish, Colonel Messenger, Oolouel Ellis, Colonel Okey, Colonel Collins, Colonel Watt, Captain Price, S'r W. Russell, and a number of old identities arid old soldiers, was set up to farther the scheme. A considerable sum has already been promised by old officers.
