RIVER IMPROVEMENT
ITo the Editor G-isboina Times.; Sir, —In view of she Hsrbcr Board
meeting to be held on Monday, it is hoped something will be decided upon at oaoe, or with the least delay possible, towards providing further plant to cope with the silt still in the river, blocking tbe trade of the port and limiting the use of the present wharfage acoommodatioD, It has loog been evident tbe present' dredging appliances are inadequate to cope with the silt or meet the needs of the port, and therefore the Board should without furtbor delay sooure further plant to meet grow' ing needs. The shipping trade of the port is esmmiog such proportions, and the number and s'zs of vessels visiting the place increasing so largely, Shat for the Board to any longer delay proouring further effective mud and silt-removing appliances would be to publicly demonstrate their inefficiency and inoapaoity as a publio body. Wnat has been accomplished in the reoent past up the Taruhetu riyer, oan as effectively be done in the present by the sams appliances—that is the sand pump—wbioh has in about »'* months remove d^asm uc h. 3 d J h e x ‘ there any sufficient reason why this sand Dump oanDOt be obtained ?—I am, etc., y v MERCHANT.
