Charge of Theft.
POLICEMAN COMMITTED FOR TRIAL.
PRESS ASSOCIATION Wellington, yesterday. Constable Joremiah O’Brien, who had been a member of tho local police force for about two years, was oharged at the S.M. Court to-day with having stolen a sovereign from a man named Bernard Ooghlan. Tho prosecutor's story is that late on the night of Octooer SOih he mat two ocnstables, one of whom spake roughly fo him Coghlau took a note of tho constable's words, having previously given tho effiosr his name and address. O'Brien put bis (Ooghlan’e) atm behind his back and rushed him c-fi so tho lock-up, where lie said bn would touch h«m to check the police. At the station O’Brien struck him on the jaw and told him to stand up and bo searched. When lie protested against the assault, O’Brien hit him again. After being searched ho was put in a cell, but was soon released. O’Brien took possession of all his belongings, including two sovereigns, but only returned him one sovereign. Coghlan denied he was drunk on the night stated, and that he had been refused a bed at a hotel because be was dirty. Later.—Constable O’Brien was committed for trial.
