Widdowson, S.M., gave judgment to-day in a case in which the licensee of the Universal Hotel had been charged | with selling whisky mixed with water with intent to fraudulently increase the bulk, After referring to Professor Black’s evidence that it was easy in breaking down whisky to inadvertently reduce its strength below 25 degrees, his Worship said he was not satisfied fraudulent intent had been proved, and he dismissed the case. At the annual meeting of the Mosgiel Woollen Factory Company, the directors’ report recommending a dividend of 2£ per cent, was adopted. Christchurch, last night.

At the Supreme Court to-day William John Starr was sentenced to 18 months’ imprisonment for indecently assaulting a little girl.
