EXPLOSION IN HOTEL.
A GUY FAWKES JOKE. Waihi, Monday. A sler'.ling explosion occurred at Kelly’s Hotel on Saturday ffigbt-, and caused a good deal of excitement in tho street; but tho affair proved to be an attempt on the part of several boardors to have a " joke” and frighten the lioousee, who had occasion to remonstrate with them for firing orackers. They obtained an explosive, the exact force of which they did not know, and fired it into one of tho rooms. Before doing sc, they covered the explosive with a bucket, tho bottom of whioh was blown sut, and some glass smashed. In protesting against the use of these eraokers, Mr Kelly, tho Tcensco, was assaulted, and this morning, at the Polioe Court, Joseph Coleman was charged with the Gfl'ence. Mr Fitzherbert, who appeared for the Bccusnd, said that the affair had to do with the Gay Fawkes celebrations, and had been meant as e joke. Cole man bad been wrongfully accused, and under prevroition had struck Mr Kelly The Benoh considered the off’nos a very ssrious one, and fined accused £5, with an alternative of one month’s imprisonment in Mount Eden gaol.
